A Statement on Music & Gender Violence

Sound System Culture is about creating spaces for the community to express and enjoy themselves through music. Dub-Stuy is committed to cultivating safe environments for people to do so, no matter their gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, or economic status.
In light of recent allegations of sexism and sexual violence in the music and entertainment industry, we want to stand in solidarity with the brave women that are sharing their stories, as well as the survivors of sexual assault who are unable to share their experiences, for whatever reason. We see you. We hear you. We believe you.
Men’s violence against women is not a new issue. We acknowledge that this has been part of women’s worlds beyond memory, and unfortunately the entertainment industry is a microcosm of that reality. It’s time to start addressing the ways we can learn, particularly for our male peers, to alter behaviors and attitudes that perpetuate a culture of disrespect and violence.
We believe this means showing empathy and compassion to survivors rather than nitpicking their experiences. It means amplifying the voices of women that we know and work with. It means stepping in when we witness those in power using it to possess and silence women. It means respecting the sanctity of personal space and reflecting on the concept of consent. Our events should always be fun and safe and we are passionate about cultivating this type of environment by maintaining accountability and holding this expectation of those that come to a session.
We have the power to shift the narrative together.
